ASC's Portal to Liberation Summit - Police Free LAUSD Learning Session

Asian Solidarity Collective's Portal to Liberation Summit - Learning Session Police Free LAUSD with Jsané Tyler, Jazmin Garcia and Maleeyah Frazier "Over the last year, Black students and a coalition of dozens of community organizations working in LAUSD and across L.A. County - including Students Deserve, Black Lives Matter-LA, Brothers, Sons, Selves Coalition, Reclaim Our Schools LA, Community Coalition, Labor/Community Strategy Center, InnerCity Struggle, CADRE, UTLA and more - have pushed the School Board to implement a Police-Free LAUSD. Since last June, LAUSD students, parents, teachers & community members have called on the School Board to Fully Defund & Eliminate the LA School Police Department, and fund Black futures!" Reclaim Our Schools Los Angeles: Who We Are: We are a Los Angeles coalition of parents, educators, students, and community members working to improve access and advance opportunities in public education for all students so they thrive in the classroom, in their communities, and beyond. (Four anchor organizations: Students Deserve, UTLA, ACCE, and LAANE) What We Stand For: - Fully-funded, fully-staffed public education for all students, including support for neighborhood community schools - A democratic process and public oversight for all schools that receive public funding to ensure student success, educator support, and parental/family involvement that includes each participant having a voice in the process - Uplifting high standards and expectations for students and educators, allowing them to fully participate in their educational lives - Advocating for highest-need students to receive the resources they need, which are also tailored to their community’s needs - Equally excellent educational opportunities and access for students of all races, socioeconomic backgrounds, geographic areas, and special needs through innovation and collaborative learning Jsané Tyler (she/her) Reclaim Our Schools LA/Students Deserve Parent Leader and organizer in Students Deserve and Reclaim Our Schools Los Angeles, co-founder of Soul Public Union, LAUSD Parent & Family Center Director, and LAUSD parent. I have been organizing parents and students into power since 2008, and have been on the frontlines of education reform for Black and other Indigenous students of Color within the LAUSD school system. I am a firm believer that all students deserve a healthy, holistic, transformative education! The whole needs of the child should always be at the forefront of education, which includes family supports that remove barriers to academic success! Students should thrive, and not just "make it across the stage." Jazmin Garcia Started my journey as an educational activist with Eastside Padres Contra La Privatizacion, fighting against the privatization of public education. My journey led me to Reclaim Our Schools Los Angeles, where I became a parent leader and now a community organizer. Everyday I am honored to be part of Reclaim Our School Los Angeles, a coalition of four anchor organizations, parents, students, educators and community working towards a police-free, racially just education in LA unified, that is representative and rooted in our communities. Maleeyah Frazier, Student Organizer
